What is Easter All About?

It's Good Friday and for many this simply means a day off with time to get ready for the Easter bunny or family coming over for an egg hunt and a good meal.  However, that is NOT what this day is about at all.  You see today is the day we set aside to celebrate the death of our Savior. And it is a celebration - for without the death of JESUS I would be hopeless and lost and covered in sin. But because of His death I am forgiven and free from sin - covered by HIS blood!!!!!

You see when sin entered into this world, the perfect relationship that God created us for was broken.  When Adam and Eve disobeyed God,  they immediately became aware of their sinfulness - as a matter of fact the first sacrifice occurred shortly after that when they began covering themselves with animal skins (Gen. 3:21). Sin brought death:

  • Gen. 3 – Adam & Eve
  • Gen. 4 – Cain kills Abel
  • Gen. 5 – genealogy is based on “and he died”
  • Gen. 6 –the flood
  • Sin can only be forgiven through a living sacrifice

And so the need for redemption became real - as a result of the love that God has for us, He determined to provide a perfect and final sacrifice in His Son, Jesus.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

Here is a video that shows this sacrifice -- this is an older song but the message is very powerful! WARNING --- the video uses scenes from The Passion of Christ and is graphic. But what a humbling reminder of the pain that JESUS went through for our sins!

But hold on this story doesn't end with Good Friday because Sunday is coming!!!! God in HIS greatness and sovereignty and love couldn't stop with the death of Jesus.  Yes Jesus' blood is what gives us forgiveness of our sin but keep in mind, we were created for a perfect relationship with God so God had to restore every part of that relationship and death was never part of God's plan. God turned his back on His only Son when Jesus took on our sin – God had no choice but to resurrect Jesus– God had to conquer death for the sake of His Son as well as for the sake of all His children – US!!!! And that is why the resurrection was necessary!

Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. (Matthew 28:1-6)

Pause and celebrate the resurrection of our Savior:

The Resurrection is the foundational truth of our faith. It is what gives us the hope and the promise of an eternal perfect restored relationship with our Father!!!

And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.(1 Corinthians 15:14-19 ESV)

My prayer is that you will take time to reflect on the true story of Easter -- from the death to the resurrection - and simply be still and know God.  And if you are reading this and have no idea what this means or have never heard anything about Jesus, please send me a message or leave me a comment -- I would be more than happy to answer your questions.

Hallelujah - my Savior Lives!!!!!!!!!!!!
